Why you should be excited and nervous to be a Charlotte Bobcats fan in 2012-13

I'm endeavoring to do a post for all 30 teams before the season starts on why if I were a fan of that team, I'd be excited and nervous. I'll talk about the great, the good, the bad, and oftentimes, the really ugly.

Let's get this out of the way. If you're a Bobcats fan, you know there's a steep climb ahead. The good news is that Michael Jordan hired Rich Cho, and by doing so, may have finally got the team headed in the right direction. In fact, this was evident to me on Draft Night when they actually took the second best player available in Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Very few people expected them to do the right thing there, perhaps, because it was unclear who was calling the shots. If you remember, MJ doesn't exactly have a strong record as far as evaluating other people's talent.

The second great pick Charlotte made on Draft Night was taking Jeff Taylor with the first pick of the second round. He was a steal there. I fully expect Taylor and Kidd-Gilchrist to eventually become one of the best perimeter defensive tandems in the league.

Other than the two rookies, you have to worry about the rest of the roster. As a Charlotte fan, you have to hope to see significant improvement from Kemba Walker and Bismack Biyombo in their sophomore seasons. It's not clear to me whether they acquired Ramon Sessions to be the full-time starter or to backup Kemba. If it's the former, that's somewhat of an early indictment of their confidence in the young point guard. Charlotte also traded Corey Maggette for Ben Gordon. Gordon has a couple years on a sizable contract, and I suppose he'll get a lot of playing time. I think that would be unfortunate, as Jeff Taylor and maybe Gerald Henderson have more upside at this point. Well, at least, Jeff Taylor probably does. Henderson just barely managed to break 51% TS last season. Not great for a third year player on a team that didn't have anything to play for.

Welp, that's about all the patience I have to discuss the Bobcats this year. For me, I'll tune in to Bobcats games on occasion to watch the progress of MKG, Taylor, and Biyombo. That's probably all you can do as a fan for now. No doubt another high lottery pick is coming next season and there are going to be some good big men available. If Charlotte can manage to land Shabazz Muhammad, that would certainly help them take the next step forward as well.
